 We talk to the writer/producer about the shortened season one, the new season, and a giant cockroach that tries to kill him. May 2, 2008 - Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles turned out to be one of the saving graces during the writers' strike. It was one of the only new shows on the air. It was originally supposed to be paired with 24, but the strike pushed that show into next year. So Sarah Connor had Monday night all to itself. Based on one of the biggest action movie franchises of all time, the series had some rather enormous shoes to fill. There's also the fact that this would be the first Terminator story told without the participation of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who got a bit busy being Governor of California. In Arnold's place came Summer Glau, who is pretty much the physical opposite in every regard. Taking over for Linda Hamilton is Lena Headey, best known for her role as Queen Gorgo in 300. Stepping in to play John Connor, and the third actor to do so (fourth if you count Michael Edwards, fifth if you count Dalton Abbott) is Thomas Dekker – previously seen on NBC's breakout hit Heroes. The series quickly established itself as its own entity. It would not be "Terminator chase of the week." Instead, the series set up a series of events that changed the game, essentially undoing the events of the third movie in the series and we find Sarah and John taking the fight to Skynet, the super computer that brings about Judgment Day. Considering that this is a major franchise for FOX, the choice of Josh Friedman seemed strange at first for one reason: he'd never worked in television before. Friedman has had a long career as a screenwriter for films such as Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds and Brian DePalma's Black Dahlia. But, he turned out to be the right guy for the job, as the series got better with each episode. The last episode that aired, which ended up being the show's writers' strike-imposed finale, was probably the best of the season. For a while it seemed touch and go whether the show's increasing number of fans would get their wish for a second season, but FOX recently delivered the good news. We decided to go right to the source and talk to Friedman about the show's first season and what's planned for the next. (Spoilers for Season 2)  Now that Fox has picked up 13 more episodes of The Sarah Connor Chronicles, star Summer Glau has high hopes for the new season. "I hope they make sure to keep the action level high," Glau told EW.com at the Young Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles on April 27. "I really enjoy it and I feel very comfortable jumping around and kicking butt. I don’t want to see it become -- and I think the fans would agree -- some sappy, depressing drama. I think we are safe, but I figured I’d put that out there." "I feel like our storylines were just starting to really come together when the strike happened, and it is going to be hard to get fans back [on board] and to attract new fans," Glau continued. "We were really building toward something, and then Bam, we had to stop. At least we had an episode filmed that was meant to be a middle episode, but it worked as a finale. So we didn’t leave people hanging in a bad spot, but you lose momentum and a level of comfort and it will be like starting all over again.” Glau's co-star, Thomas Dekker (John Connor), who attended the ceremony to accept a Young Hollywood award, promises the show will come back in the fall "like a proper series" and will take six months to prepare. "We are going back to shoot in June," he said. "It is a very complicated show with lots of effects and stunts, so it takes a while to do each episode. And, of course, we are hoping that once we do those 13 they will keep us on to finish out a whole season." As for his character, Dekker says that "John undergoes a lot of changes in the coming episodes and season. It was intentional. Anyone who was afraid that my John was a little too weak will be pleasantly surprised in the second season. It was always the plan that I would go through a transformation and become a bad ass. I have to prove I am not a wimp and it’s going to be fun. Did the show’s budget give FOX pause when thinking about green-lighting a second season? No, I don’t think the budget gave FOX pause at all. Move wasn't a surprise; net and Warner Bros. TV had already started staffing a second season of the show. Fox has also been developing potential companion series to the sci-fi hourlong and, in meetings with advertisers, execs have discussed several potential scheduling scenarios that include the show. "It was a very ambitious show, and I myself was wondering if they could take on this mythology on a weekly basis," said Fox Entertainment prexy Kevin Reilly, who credited exec producers Josh Friedman and John Wirth with making it work. "I'm excited to see them take another whack at it." Pickup was a no-brainer as "Sarah Connor" reps one of the year's most successful frosh entries -- averaging a 4.4 rating/10 share among adults 18-49, as well as 10.5 million viewers overall. "Sarah Connor" opened big behind an NFL playoff game -- pumping up the show's overall average. But Reilly said he was "impressed with the fact that the show found a core audience." In a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter, FOX Entertainment President Kevin Reilly is asked about the expectations that Terminator and fellow recent FOX series Back to You will be renewed. Reilly replies "They're really the lead candidates at this point. We've already started staffing on Sarah Connor. Although it was an unusual season, it will end up finishing by far and away the strongest new drama of the season." Reilly mentioning that they are staffing for Sarah Connor follows on TV Guide's Michael Ausiello recent report that directors were being hired for the first three episodes of Season 2. By Shelley Gabert from filmstew.com Casting; it’s as important an ingredient for success on the small screen as it is on the big one. Case in point: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Though the FOX series, per TV Guide’s Michael Ausciello, may well be back for a second season this fall and has just been picked up for broadcast in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Philippines beginning April 8th on Sony’s AXN network, it could have been so much better. At the most recent Television Critics Association Press Tour, Julianna Margulies preceded show star Lena Headey on a separate FOX panel for her legal drama Canterbury’s Law and to me, then and now, seems like someone who would have been much better in the role. (Though Headey, at 34 to Margulies’ 41, is closer to the 28-35 age that Linda Hamilton spanned in the first two Terminator movies, the storyline could have easily been adjusted for the latter and in some senses could well have framed a more organic follow-up.) Still, there is chemistry between Headey and her son (Thomas Dekker ) and despite some major special effects, that's a core element of the show. "I was hired as a guest star in the pilot [only],” Dekker revealed at the time. “The fact that the character took on such attention was really just a nice gift and a plus.” The chatter on some fan sites is that FOX will lean towards renewing The Sarah Connor Chronicles if for no other reason than the way it would bask in the glow of the lead-up to Warner Bros. and Sony’s May 2009 theatrical release of McG’s Terminator: Return of the Terminator. In that case, casting has veered towards a very serious attempt to reboot the franchise, with Christian Bale and Anton Yelchin top billed as John Connor and Kyle Reese. Adding fuel to my Margulies fire is the fact that in its debut, Canterbury’s Law debuted last Friday in 78th place with a miniscule 4.74 million viewers.
